This Week: Ethics in the News

Highlights from some of the week's top ethics news stories. 


The U.S. Supreme Court is losing trust from the public. The court's approval rating has gone down to 46% due to the justices' reticence about ethics questions and their refusal to televise oral arguments. Oral arguments against the Affordable Care Act are to be presented within this month.

There is a growing consensus among scientists that the planet's climate is being altered by human activity; however, the contention over climate change broils on. This week, Pacific Institute Climate Research Group president, Peter Gleick, stepped down citing a lapse in professional judgement and ethics. Gleick admitted to stealing and then leaking information from climate change skeptic Heartland Institute.

The Mormon church is accused of performing posthumous baptisms on Holocaust victims. Allegations that the church posthumously baptized Anne Frank have surfaced just one week after they were accused of performing posthumous baptisms on the parents of Holocaust survivor and human rights activist Simon Weisenthal. Posthumous baptisms of non-Mormons were barred in 1995 and church officials claim the recent baptisms weren't approved by the church. Jewish leaders are offended and infuriated.

A mortgage settlement from big banks could go up to $30 billion. Five of America's biggest banks will be required to pay a penalty for their role in the mortgage crisis. One in five American homes are underwater. Homeowners question whether or not the unified settlement is preferable to individual lawsuits brought against the banks.
